CSR/ESG Maritime Sustainability Program

NAMEPA’s CSR/ESG Program offers a vehicle for industry members to incorporate CSR/ESG strategies while working towards the NAMEPA Seal of Approval, our Maritime Sustainability Passport. Those who choose to complete NAMEPA’s Maritime Sustainability Program will have access to a comprehensive base of information and guidelines with our new & improved CSR/ESG Tool Kit

MARPOL: Tools for Effective Compliance

OPERATION: COMPLIANCE is designed to educate the seafarer and shoreside personnel on the importance of environmental compliance, including MARPOL compliance, and to provide educational tools to support compliance efforts and the reporting of non-compliance. The original project in 2017 was made possible through a grant from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) specifically for the ports of Wilmington and Morehead City, North Carolina. This program is being updated and designed for use in Massachusetts through a grant from National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) in 2021 and 2022. NAMEPA offers support to implement this program to educate members, seafarers and shoreside personnel.

Education Initiatives

NAMEPA’s Planet & Ocean Discovery Series (PODs) launched in December of 2020. During 2021, PODs proved to be a major success as an educational asset with COVID-19 playing a pivotal role in the need for virtual learning. PODs was developed to be completely accessible virtually and is designed to bring NAMEPA into the classroom anytime & anywhere. The Planet and Ocean Discovery series hosts videos, PowerPoint guided lectures, activities for students, and guides for teachers in order to teach students the importance of the marine environment.

2021 NAMEPA Interns

Grace Cooper

I was introduced to the North American Marine Environment Protection Association (NAMEPA) my senior year of high school for our end of the year internship. Due to COVID-19, the internship was entirely online and I participated by creating educational videos on the marine environment for them. This past summer I wanted to intern with NAMEPA again because I loved working with them and am passionate about saving our seas. My high school intern experience with NAMEPA introduced me to the maritime industry and expanded my knowledge about the marine environment. I knew I wanted to continue to learn in these areas. Being an intern with NAMEPA this summer has been an amazing experience and it has helped me grow as a learner and educator.

Emma Hughes

Throughout my internship with NAMEPA this summer, one thought in particular that stayed in my mind was, “Wow, I never even knew/thought of that.” I wasn’t particularly well informed about the marine environment going into this internship. Still, I had a desire to widen my horizons, and NAMEPA has helped me go above and beyond to develop a passion for this work.

Ryan Salese

Throughout my time working as an intern for North American Marine Environment Protection Association (NAMEPA), I learned quite a bit about what it means to be a part of educational, maritime-focused outreach. Education outreach was one of many things on my task list, but it was the experience I benefitted from the most. While teaching students of all ages, having the opportunity to learn from them while educating was a treat – and it taught me a lot about why this is important, and how it can be successful….

Julia D'Agostino

As a NAMEPA summer intern I got great insight into the maritime industry. I learned about the many industry leaders and maritime schools across the nation. I am currently in my first semester at SUNY Maritime College and the knowledge I gained from my position at NAMEPA helped me transition into the school culture. As an intern I worked mainly with large data sets on Excel, helping to organize and restructure NAMEPA member data. My favorite part of the experience was learning about the many fields and careers available within the maritime industry.

Caroline McInerney

Over the course of the four weeks I worked with the North American Marine Environment Protection Association, I have learned about the maritime industry, marine life and worked my creative brain more than I ever would have without this experience. Throughout my internship, I worked with the education team to increase awareness about ways to Save Our Seas, educate the public about important marine habitats and help those understand how certain habitats are being heavily affected by the changing climate. I spent the majority of the internship creating educational videos to accompany pre existing curriculum and education guides regarding things like marine debris, carbon sequestration, polar bears and the arctic habitat, phytoremediation and superfund sites.

Social Media Updates

In response to a rapidly growing need for virtual communication, NAMEPA drastically increased its social media presence. Our goal was to increase our visibility and recognizability as a brand. We forged digital partnerships with other organizations such as Patagonia in Westport and NESS, partnering on social media campaigns. We continue to make it our mission to engage our audience to create a community of those working to help Save Our Seas.
